From what what I have read from various different sources, I heard conflicting informative on when the Woolworth Building lobby was closed to the public. I have seen sources say that the lobby was closed to the public in 1941 right after Pearl Harbor, 1945 when World War 2 ended, the late 1990's, and 2001 after the attacks on 9/11. I do know that lobby tours were begun in 2014 and have been suspended since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were occassional Open House tours to the Woolworth Building lobby in at least 2012 and 2013, at least one of which went to the long closed 57th floor observation deck. Also, I do know that the observation deck has been closed since 1941 due to security measures after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the deck never reopened to the public after the war. So, does anyone here know for sure what year the lobby of the Woolworth Building was closed to drop in public viewing?

It was at least 20 years ago that I attempted to admire the Woolworth Building lobby but was turned away by security.
I am a very presentable looking, well-dressed white man with no tattoos, weapons or backpacks. I explained I wanted only to admire the magnificent Art Deco design for no more than 10 minutes.

"Sorry,sir."

Were the Twin Towers still standing when you were turned away.

Upper floors of Woolworth building are luxury condos, which may (or may not) play into any decision restricting looky loos.

Bottom line is world changed post 11 September 2021 and again with recent covid. Property owners aren't always thrilled to have hordes or even just the odd random person wandering about on their own. Anything can happen.

Woolworth building used to have guided tours, but think that has ceased as well.

I think they were still standing. If pressed, I would place my visit between the Woolworth bankruptcy in 1997 and 9/11/2001 but I am not at all certain of this????

I worked at 225 broadway for many years (1994-2002). Before 9/11 you could cut through the Woolworth building to get from Park Place to Barclay Street. I did it everyday and went to the newsstand in there too.

Was 9/11 the day they stopped letting you cut through the Woolworth Building to get from Point A to Point B.
