Hadn't been up that part of Third all summer, but did walk past other night and noticed Wankel's hardware, and UES/Yorkville staple for over one hundred years is gone.
Apparently building is up for sale, but there may have been other reasons why family decided to pack it in.
We've known this for months. They've sold the building. But the air rights have already been sold, so it's not likely to be torn down.
Wankel's was very convenient to me, but I never found it particularly useful. If needed something local, I'd go down the hill to the hardware store on 2nd. But more likely I'd go to Home Despot.

You should have said then...
If was up that way would stop in Wankel's. My other go to place is Rainbow/ACE hardware on First near 76th.
Usually try to plan larger things for when am in NJ or SI so can load up and drive back into city.
If am down that way Home Depot by Bloomingdale's while a hot mess can work. Don't know will still use them as much when they move over to former Bed, Bath and Beyond space on First. There's no parking around that area and it's not near subway either.
Note that the same neighborhood (which is my neighborhood) recently opened an new Target. So retail isn't dead. And from my use Amazon seems to be getting less useful.

I was surprised Wankel was closing. I eat very often across the street at WOK 88. In 11 years I have bought only one item from Wankel, a 6-volt flashlight battery. They could not compete with Home Depot and Lowe's pricewise which is the same story with all hardware stores.
mod cut - off topic
