I've always said that one great thing about NYC is all the local newspapers, plus the fact that we're the headquarters for so many national magazines.

Tired of Waiting for Their Dream Workplace, These Writers Made Their Own
The group kept returning to a tantalizing idea: What if there were a lean, mean news publication owned and operated by the journalists themselves, beholden to no hedge funds, advertisers, for-profit companies or billionaires? An outlet whose sole mission was to write great stories about one of the greatest cities in the world? How hard could that be?
So what is a Hell Gate story? If you ask the owners, a Hell Gate story is that thing every New Yorker has passed walking down the street, that fleeting, only-in-New-York moment that everyone wonders about but doesn’t understand. Nutcrackers cost $15 now? That’s a Hell Gate story. Why are New Yorkers making eye contact with strangers now? Put it on Hell Gate.

Just realized I posted to the article, but not to the Hell Gate news site itself.

A few interesting articles already.

Seems like just another transplant-centric publication. Unoriginal, uninteresting, and vapid.

“That fleeting ‘only-in-New York-moment’” written by kids who have only been in NY for a fleeting moment. Like when they notice that all bodegas have a cat. That’s so New York!

I'm not sure what you mean by "unoriginal." You do know that news outlets cover the same news, right?

What NYC-centric news outlets do you like?

There used to be some very good local (neighborhood/borough) blogs back when blogging was in it's heyday (late 90s through ~2012).

Nowadays it's mostly food/restaurant review websites masquerading as "news" outlets . For some reason, transplants are obsessed with food. Probably because the places they came from didn't have much variety.

If I had to choose my favorite NYC-centric "news" outlet it'd be The Real Deal. Since real estate plays such a large role in NYC, one can suss out a lot of trends/ news before it makes it into the mainstream and other seemingly "random" events become more apparent if you follow the website long enough.
