Do you think the increase in crime will prevent more gentrification?

Maybe the good in all this is lower income individuals won’t be displaced as much.

And the cost of living probably won’t go up by much.

Are we cheering the decline of gentrification due to increase in crime?
You can’t be serious.
Half the city would be a ghetto if it wasn’t for gentrification.
Unless you own your property, no one owes you crap. When you can’t afford to live, you move to where you can afford it.
It is your responsibility to remain relevant and up to date with your skills to make a good living.
Simple economics all around the world.

All those liberal white white hipster did not start gentrifying until Giuliani made it safe for them to move into the hood. Thats why it so ironic when they whined against the evils of Giuliani, but their trustfund parents would not have allowed them to move to nyc if Giuliani did not clean the place up for them.

If NYC isn't getting nicer due to gentrification then other places, like in Dutchess County, are seeing prices and real estate popping. They gotta go somewhere. Though Newburg is giving them a run for their money.

Let the boroughs turn into food deserts if they desire.

Not at all. In fact, after COVID, gentrification has been supercharged in neighborhoods like Bed Study and Bushwick. There's even early signs of gentrification in East New York.

People who leave are atleast commendable for their bravery and awareness. The ones moving in after them are dumber and replace the smarter ones. I don't think NYC folks are getting smarter. Just look at the politicians they elect, that's proof that the people who move in less intelligent and less educated. Re-electing DeBlasio of all politicians show a lack of intellect and voting for people like AOC is worse than electing Trump. AOC has zero accomplishment and credibility, that's how smart NYers have become.

How much crap and being overly taxed can people take without any awareness unless you're intellectually bankrupt.

Gentrification slowed down a lot under DeBlasio. People were talking about Bushwick gentrifying during Bloombergs 3rd term, if things had continued since then Bushwick would be fully gentrified by now.

It was hard to tell during the first year of the pandemic, but it's certainly pretty apparent now that gentrification is still moving ahead pretty quickly. It did not seem to slow down during Big Bird's era, but it did get a bit dicey during the height of the pandemic where you also had people saying the city was permanently over and there was indeed a substantial number of people moving out of the city. There are also probably a pretty large number of people who moved out early in the pandemic like in the 2020, but have moved back within this year which is the case for several people I know. One couple I know ended up saving quite a bit of money while away and fortunately came back early enough to a then soft real estate market and low interest rates which worked out pretty well in their favor. Property shopping last year was a pretty weird experience. More common though was to have gotten back a little later and get hit a bit with sticker shock especially if they had earlier come across articles about how the city is dead or that landlords were offering massive discounts (which they were to some degree, but that was over some time last year or this year).

The transplant gentrifiers used to be narcissistic hipsters. Now they are narcissistic TikTok stars.

A lot are also neither since those two categories sometimes don't generate the kind of income that makes living in NYC a lot more pleasant--well, unless you're actually a star in the latter category where you're actually making a substantial living off of social media which does exist.
