From what I understand, the observation deck on the 54th floor of the Chanin Building was open to the public from when the building opened in 1929 until at least 1961, but was closed in the mid 20th century as a result of the building being dwarfed by taller skyscrapers. I found that in 1939, the observation deck was open from 9 am to 11 pm daily and tickets were 55 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. Additionaly, I found that tickets in 1947 and 1961 were 25 cents and the hours of operation in 1961 were 9 am to 6 pm daily. I have not however been able to find exactly when the observation deck was closed to the public or any pictures of the deck and the view from there during the years it was open for public access. So, does anyone here know what year or the exact date the Chanin Building observation deck was closed to the public. I would also appreciate if anyone has any pictures of the observation deck and the view from there during the years it was open to the public.
