Mandating the use of these bins will slow down collections. It's quicker for a worker to pick up a bag and throw it in the truck than drag a bin to the truck, empty it, and return it to the sidewalk.

The bins in the article are the 2 wheeled, lidded bins that are picked up by a mechanical arm on the truck. Odd tho that there are 3 sizes, depending on contents. Sounds like they are starting a recycling system also.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: my mechanically-dumped bin and local sanitation in general, is one of the best parts of moving to NJ. If DSNY is switching to this method, you should applaud it.
I hate to crap on fellow city workers but my garbage collection over my 12 years of NYC homeownership was just terrible. IF the garbage was even picked up, you never knew where your can was going to end up and how much new damage it would have when you found it. And that’s on top of all the stupid city laws regarding trash.
Now, whatever I toss into that can and drag to the curb will 100% be taken by 930 AM every Monday. If Monday is a holiday, they come promptly on Tuesday, which rarely happened in the city. If there’s snow, they may still remove garbage but at worst, the next day, unlike in NYC where 2” of snow on Saturday means no garbage pickup till Thursday (if you’re lucky).
Trying to wrap my head around how this will work. The Gman will stop in front of my house wheel the can out into the street hook it to the truck and then wheel it back to where he found it? As noted above, seems easier/quicker to just sling bags.

If NYC's plan is catching up to the 21st Century, the truck will have an arm that lifts, dumps, and places the can back down in the exact same spot without a scratch, something the DSNY hasn't figured out how to do in 100 years.

Thanks for the video/pics I've seen it in action. In nice suburban neighborhoods. I can't see how the truck is going to hook into cans with double parkers, delivery trucks, bike lanes and bumper to bumper parked cars blocking the cans.
