I didn’t even know this was illegal.
What about all of the brick and mortar stores that line up that stretch that sell knockoff perfume and whatnot?
I always thought those street vendors added a unique character to the street. I’d hate to see it EVERYWHERE, but don’t mind it in one select area like that.
Why does it have to be the “top thing” in order to have it addressed?
Should we only pick one “top thing” say like street crime, and then forget about everything else including quality of life stuff like not having illegal vendors all over the place?
Last I checked the city does sometimes respond when you make a complaint. I did a 311 complaint about trash being dumped outside a construction site and not only did sanitation come clean it, they fined the property owner and they called me to let me know they took care of it.
Is a pile of trash the “top thing” to request to be addressed? No. But some people like me want a cleaner city with better quality of life
So nothing bizarre about cops chasing someone who is not harming or disturbing anyone?
If I saw cops chase menacing folks often, then you have a point. But I've rarely, if ever , seen that happen.
When I lived in NYC, the peddlers on Canal St where there and regularly chased off by police or got their merchandise impounded. That was throughout the 80's.

You’re wrong about it not disturbing anyone. Clearly it is disturbing people, abd not only that but unfair competition for the brick and mortar stores that pay rent and taxes, and not to mention it’s illegal
Do you think this is your city and only yours where you get to make the rules and decide what illegal things should be addressed or not?
News flash. It’s not up to you and not everyone shares your opinion.
Open a store on Canal St. paying exorbitant rent, taxes, insurance, business license fees etc. and when someone plops a blanket on the sidewalk directly in front of your door able to sell the same merchandise at a lower price due to no overheard get back to us about how "harmless" it is.
Was walking around Canal st. last Sunday and was startled with police chasing after folks selling fake designer handbags. Probably around a dozen sellers running for their lives through a busy sidewalk and dropping their merchandise all over the ground. Saw two cops running to chase after them and picking up some of their dropped bags .
Really, who cares about that stuff? Canal st. is full of stores selling fake merchandise, not just handbags. My kid bought some fake pokemon cards, a fake Ronaldo T-shirt and a fake Ronaldo poster. This seemed way over the top and unnecessarily put the public at risk. I felt like one of the sellers running away might start shooting a gun or something.
Grandstanding at it's finest?!
You either are very young or not a native NY'er; NYPD has been going after persons selling counterfeit designer goods on streets for decades. This and or they raid warehouses and other places or go after persons doing same indoors.
Bootleg goods are a worldwide problem with many places in Europe and elsewhere also cracking down.

They are not selling the same merchandise. And the stores on Canal street are selling plenty of other fake goods.

Nicely ignoring the fact that why we don't see cops chase anybody else? Why is all the "chasing" reserved for these folks? And they are not directly competing with the businesses in the area so not sure where the "unfair competition" comes from.
Everyone is required to pay tax on their income, regardless of source.
