Maybe a word or two. That classic NY accent is gone but most every New Yorker is influenced by it even today. I dont think I have an accent, but when I talk to other people they say I do.
There are too many different culures in NYC that influence the way we speak. That NY accent thing is all but gone.
There was already another thread on this. There isn't one uniform accent no. But there are several, that you will only in this area. People upstate sure as heck don't talk like anyone in NYC. Go upstate and see for yourself.
And yes, a lot of people still have the accent. The first time I visited NYC (a few years ago) it was so funny getting off the plane at La Guardia and hearing loud guys everywhere on their cellphones power-walking and talking so loud and fast with their NY accents! It was so...different and interesting.

Don't mean to sound blunt, Miami305Kid, but why is a small city such as Miami so ghetto? I'm curious.
Its possible unless you make a conscious effort to avoid it. Also, if you mostly hang out with other transplants, chances are less.
I picked it up a bit or so people outside NY said. Probably helped that I lived there at the age when a toddler learns to talk. Not that I sounded like Peter Clemenza. Just enough to be noticable.
I moved to Texas for a year from New York and everyone there thought I had walked out of a Scorcese film. Imagine if they met a real Brooklynite. Helped get some dates though...
Na i disagree. The accent is very much alive. Mainly in bx qns and bk. Another sentennce had to be devoted to staten island and their hold on the ny accent.
