I haven't looked all that much yet. I'm pretty familiar with the area in general (know where to stay away from ,etc.) so I'm not concerned. I just had never looked at rents before and was pleasantly surprised to see that I could afford places I saw in Manhattan (though it would be stretching my budget by quite a bit so it's not worth it to me), but most likely I'll find a place outside of the city.

Incidentally, DCGUY, D.C. is the other city on my list.
I don't know a lot about Brooklyn..but when I went to Bensonhurst..it was GORGEOUS. The rent is quite affordable down there for a one bedroom it seems to be around 1000-1400. These include some basement apartments. If you're openminded I would really look into a basement apartment because in NYC you are OUT all the time and wasting money on rent sucks when you could be saving. I had my notion that I was going to live in an elevator building. Didn't happen.but I'm glad..I save soooo much money now and you will find that the minimal is more than sufficient.
Most places in Queens are about a 20-30 minute train ride to Manhattan as well. Unless you plan on working downtown..or in Manhattan at all..then you will have to add the time accordingly.

DC can be a great city, too, but it really tends to shut down at 10 o'clock most nights. It doesn't have the energy of New York, but it's not bad for a city.

And, instead of 3,000 sf in the Village, why not take a nice pre-war on the Museum Mile? You should be able to find a decent 12 + 2 maids at a reasonable rent, no?

Most of us want out...or have had a taste already..and want to move on to the next bucket of ice cream. haha
Its all relative man, I've been living around here my whole life, I could use a year in the mountains
