Has anybody heard or know what they are doing at the World Trade Center site??? I am an Ohioan and don't know much about it.
It’s been redesigned about 6 times work has started but it will look nothing like the final showed to the public. Everything has been cut to the bone; nobody will rent office space above 30th floor.
The antenna will make up most the freedom towers height of 1776 feet, no underground waterfalls and stuff.
The WTC insurance company got the Supreme courts judges to rule that 2 aircraft strikes counted as a single attack and get away with 1/2 the payout. Then Bush and NY Govoner Patacki used the war and other BS to cut promised "anything you need" matching rebuild funds.
If you follow the news on a regular basis, you'll be able to catch up on what is happening at the WTC.
One of several delays was the discovery of additional human bones in manholes (metal plates on many corners that go underground) at the western end of the site.
Possibly another reason for delay is the environmental assessments of the air in the district.
Insurance issues is yet another reason for delays as is the design and intention of rebuilding at the site.
Frankly, I am relieved that I no longer work in a building overlooking the site--a daily reminder of 9-11.
Basically, they've done a very New York thing: kill a bold, innovative skyscraper design and substitute it for a boring, predictable glass-and-steel tower of those seen anywhere around Manhattan. Gone is the masterful Daniel Libeskind and in is the awful David Childs of corporate SOM.
On top of that, five-and-a-half years after the attacks, there's still a big hole in our city. Our loss, once again. What a shame!
I hope at least they will let Santiago Calatrava build his Fulton Station, or the whole Ground Zero will be as pathetic and bland as a bad suburb.
The orginal design of the Freedom Tower was not bold at all. It was amazingly ugly. The new design is much better looking than the first design, and more so than the original Twin Towers.
Waiting five years is not too long to wait before reconstruction. It took eight years to build the Twin Towers. The Freedom Tower will be completed in 2009, eight years after Sept. 11.

What you said about the new tower being completed 8 years after 911, and the origional Twin Towers taking eight years to complete kind of freaks me out! Weird coincidence, if it is?
Groundbreaking for the construction of the World Trade Center was on August 5, 1966. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was on April 4, 1973... Not exactly eight years, but six years and seven months.
Construction on the Freedom Tower began April 26, 2006 with an estimated completion of 2009. (Three years to construct)
From destruction to reconstruction, only eight years. Not bad, considering the circumstances.
