That sleep on mattresses on the floor with a dozen others and work 16 hours a day. A full week of minimum wage ($7.15) work takes home a little over $200 per week. You can rent probably a room on that and survive on $75 worth of food per week, but you can't save your money or go to school or have fun or have anything more than the bare necessities unless you work a load of overtime. It would be a vicious cycle of minimum-wageness. Not worth a change of scenery, it's not like she's escaping a third world country or something.

If you are beautiful and have a winning personality you might be able to make a go of it. This city doesn't really let beautiful people suffer - at least not in a basic meeting of material needs kinda way. Inner life suffering is your own deal. I'm not kidding. If you are beautiful you will have no trouble finding a rich significant other really fast. I know it's not an ideal path, but the truth is the truth and sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

Waiters can make really good money in this town. I know a bartender who comes close to 100k a year including tips. Lots of money floating around here. You just gotta figure out how to tap into it.

And there is nothing wrong with trying to make it in NYC. Failure doesn't have to be the end of the world, but having gumption in spades will serve you well here.

I think "beautiful" = "young" on this board.

OH really? What defines young? If it's under 25 then DAMNNNNNNN I must be finnnnnneeee! HA!
Anyway...back to the thread..Girl please, don't make us Cali girls look this clueless...you can't even survive over there on minimum wage. NYC is AS expensive as Cali...even more in some parts (MANHATTTYYYY)....I would highly suggest waitressing. My old landlord was sort of busted/average looking and she waitressed at hamburger place in Manhattan (nothing too fancy) and she brought home about 1k a week..not too bad..BUt she wasn't the lazy type..very motivated..she had some loser boyfriend to take care of too. So if you have energy..I suggest that.

Don't move to NYC unless you can get a roomate. The rule is to make 40x the rent and have good credit. You won't be able to do this. Even a walkup studio is 1400 or so. Go to Queens, try Astoria or Long Island City. Not crazy on Long Island City but some streets are ok- it's changing for the better. If I were you I would try roomates.com. Don't try this move on your own- not on a minimum wage job. Stay in Cali for a bit longer until you have a better plan or you can secure a better job in NYC. It's really far more expensive than Cali. Good luck.

i gotta disagree with the above post. i'm a beautiful man, handsome, turn the heads of many a woman as i walk down the street in my blue polyester suit, orange tie, yellow shoes, and polka dot parasol.

notwithstanding all of the above, i am suffering. my looks can't pay my overdue rent or pay my subway fare. i can't cash in my winning personality at the grocery store.

no siree, i won't advise the cali gal to come here thinking that beauty will get her anywhere in the big apple. we beautiful, sexy people are a dime a dozen. come here only with a solid financial plan for the future or the tears will be falling all over your beautiful body as you board that greyhound back to LA or wherever.

sorry to be so candid, but forewarned is forearmed.

I know someone renting out a closet for $25 a day on Pacific st, where Pacific intersects with Eastern pkwy & Mother Gaston. Believe me, this is not advice, I'm just letting you know where minimum wage can get you.

LOL...Miles, you are too funny. Why am I getting an image of Tim Curry strolling down CPW in that ensemble that you described?

Seriously, though, the OP does need to think about coming here, since one can trade beauty only so far. This has been immortalized in pop culture by Marilyn Monroe and Madonna regarding the commoditization of looks for material items in song, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Material Girl," respectively.

And, have we learned nothing from bad 80s "hair metal" bands like Poison?? Just look at their video for "Fallen Angel," and it will tell the sad tale of a girl who leaves for the big city on her looks alone.

Absolutely. No doubt the OP may be a very beautiful person - physically and internally. Those attributes can never hurt one in life but one should not relocate on a whim that the outward beauty will guarantee success in a city like NYC that is inundated with attractive people. To be sure, in any nook or cranny in life, one should not try to parlay looks or substitute beauty for a solid financial plan.

The exterior is but a temporary armor that oft withers with time but the essence and soul of a person along with a solid educational profile and some bucks in the bank can weather the vicissitudes of life.
