Just moved to 72 and bway, any recommendations for any dirt cheap food places (Chinese, mexican, italian, etc)? The only place I know is Papaya dog on the corner of 72 and amsterdam.
There is a Chinese Cuban restaurant around there. I think it may be around 76th Street and Broadway (maybe a little further up). It is fairly inexpensive and you get your money's worth.
When I lived there a few years ago, there was a fabulous and cheap Mexican take-out in the middle of 72nd (between Broadway and Columbus, south side of the street). Total divey looking place, but the food had me coming back time and time again. The funny thing is it is run by Asians. And we are talking DIRT cheap! But I doubt you'd want to eat your meal there - it's best for a take-out. There is (or was)also another Mexican place a few doors down that was really good...but, for some reason I liked the other one best.
La Caridad, around 78th and Broadway: CHEAP, plentiful Cuban-Chinese food!!!!
Frankly, I don't like H&H bagels - they're not crispy on the outside and they're too sweet. Tal Bagels, which has several branches, including one on the West side, makes FAR superior bagels, much more like those I remember when I was a kid 50 years ago: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and deliciously yeasty without the taste of sugar.
Last time I was at H&H I remember thinking that the bagels were rather pricey (for bagels). Also, they don't put anything on them. If you want cream cheese you have to buy a whole container!
i just came back from nyc last week (for vacation). if u go to NYC Restaurants, NYC menus, ratings, reviews, New York City Restaurants Guide, you can search for what type of food u want, and can look of value ratings ($=cheap; $$$$=expensive). we went to plenty of low-cost restaurants and the food/taste was 4+!!!

I've used that site in the past, and it is excellent.
