Long story, but our apartment in the East Village fell through at the last minute, so we've been scrambling to find somewhere else to live; we're looking for a 2-BR under $2,500, and so far have applied for places in the LES, East Village, and Chinatown/Little Italy. Husband works 21st/Park. We have a four-year-old, and were initially drawn to the EV because of its proximity to work (really wanted to be able to walk), the progressive elementary schools in District 1, and because we thought it seemed both interesting and family-friendly. The rental market is tight, and although we put in applications nothing seems to ever happen. We'd still prefer to be in that general part of the city, but are now willing to start exploring other possibilities, even if it meant giving up the walk-to-work option. UES is an option (although fairly low on my list); I'm more interested in considering some of the Queens or Brooklyn options. Any suggestions? I was thinking Astoria or Long Island City, and maybe Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg, Cobble Hill, in Brooklyn. (not interested in Park Slope) I'm going to have to do a lot more research, obviously, but I'd be especially curious to hear about schools; we're definitely going public, and I'd like a school with a more progressive vibe to it.

Never mind -- a lease came through right after we posted this, so looks like we'll be in the EV after all! (will look forward to exploring lots of other neighborhoods all over the city, though!)

UI,

Tell us about your 2 bedroom E. Village apartment for under $2500. Can hubby still walk to work on 21st St? (It would be a stretch from 6th and Avenue C )
