We are coming to NYC for Easter weekend and are considering taking our daugther (5) to see either Little Mermaid or Mary Poppins (matinee (3 PM) on either Saturday or Easter Sunday).
How do we need to dress for a matinee show? Will we see everything from all-out dressed up to jeans? Trying to pack as light as I can for a 3 day weekend, but do not want to be under-dressed either.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
The most common dress is business casual. However, jeans are also common.
In the old days (the 1950s, when I was a child, and before that), people used to get dressed up ANY time they went to the theater. Over time that has changed, and to some degree it's a pity, because it did make going seem like such a special event. Now people look like slobs.
Thanks for the replies.....we will stick with business casual (even though I think it would fun to get dressed up....I'll save that for another time...a warmer time )
Oh please, don't worry about what you wear. Wait till you get inside the theater and see how rude your neighbors are with their cell phone and blackberries. Ugh.

There is no dress code anymore. You can get dressed up if you prefer, but casual and jeans are fine as well. Funny enough, the people who generally get dressed up for the theater are usually tourists.

Well that will be me then. I am by no means going prom-fancy, but we will wear nice clothes, business cas/church...something along those lines. I can't imagine wearing jeans and want my daughter to understand that it's a privilege just to be getting to go. Thanks
