"The U.S. military gave New York a scare this morning when it flew an airliner followed by two F-16 fighter jets around the Statue of Liberty". What were they thinking??! This definitely deserves some kind of, um... award
After what New York has been through I can't imagine how they must have reacted. I know my hands would be shaking ALL DAY after that.
Just after 911 I was at Disney, Epcot with my daughter and a formation of f-15s or something like them flew over Disney. Disney has a no fly zone over them, you just don't see planes over the parks. Then of course there was the fact that threats had been made that the next place there were going to hit would be places like stadiums, parks like Disney etc. Thankfully I had my cell phone and was able to call a friend to find all was well.
They were just patrolling the airspace but it made me think what on earth would happen if something like 911 started happening in other parts of the US.
Wow. I can't help but think of the word "Irresponsible".
Can't tell me for at the very least, a week ahead of time, they could've posted something on the nightly news that this was going to happen. radio commercials. Something.

I live in New York, with the city to my south, West Point to my north and Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant to my east. There isn't a day that goes by where when I see or hear an airplane overheard, I don't think about 9/11. I'm not paranoid, I'm not afraid, but I don't think I'll ever forget what happened.
devils advocate here... I was thinking the same thing about why couldn't they inform folks about it before hand... then my brain said, what better time to make a hit then when everyone isn't on watch and just think 'oh that is that plane they have been talking about for the past week, no biggie'.
a ways back we had this lovely texas small town with part of the highway jogging through it. All us kiddos knew that this town had exactly 2 cops on duty at any given time. All we had to do was count the cars in the station ( wow 2 ) and we knew if we could make our 45 minute trip down to 15 minutes or not.
So if you know you won't be looked at being odd for low flying think off all the things an enemy could have gotten away with had the public been pre-informed and not on alert.
Just a thought.
Hey I don't live in NY, but everytime I hear helicopters and low flying air craft that noise makes me shudder and look up. I was on base in Italy during desert storm and watch all my exhubby's friends and mine come and go constantly. And then waiting with my friends to see if their hubby made it back.... not easy.
**** just heard on TV about the low fly by and well... even NY mayor didn't know about the photo opt. LOL ya think he might need to know? ****

LOL... you'd think that doing that for a photo op is a little much. I mean... isn't that why they invented Photoshop?
Wonder how much the photo op cost.
