After several months searching and narrowing my search by listening to feedback from these threads I think we have finally found an apt that may be in our price range. Before we sign a lease, I want your honest opinion...the area is 137 and Broadway....for those of you more experienced in the city...what is your take in this area? thanks!

I know someone who was robbed in that neighborhood, but that was many years ago. Not sure if the area has changed. Is that near the city college?

Yes, that's where City College is located. I believe the area has improved quite a bit lately.

Safety is improving but not yet considered mostly safe. Lots of quality of life issues. Mainly it's noisy as heck. The train rolls by around there and there is lots of other street noise. City College is a big stabilizer so the area is always busy with college students. Services and shopping are still lacking but slowly improving.

Major pluses of the area are that riverside is full of parkland and is very nice, plus area in general has a good amount of parkland (Riverbank state park is a little further up). The other big plus is that it's pretty convenient transportation wise.

The area is definitely improving but in my opinion for what you pay in rent there these days you can get a little more bang for your buck elsewhere.

You are right on this one. With City College nearby, the area is full of college students. Services are slowly coming to this area and parks are pretty nice along Riverside Drive, with views of the Hudson River. The only downsides to this area are the noise, speeding cars on Broadway, and parking problems.

The rents are similar a little further up in Wash Heights/Inwood, and frankly that area has better services and depending on the exact location it might be safer and maybe even less noisy. You also might be able to find something in Astoria.

Also there are neighborhoods in the Bronx like Parkchester or Morris Park.

I'm pretty sure a 2br in P'Chester is still less than $1600. Their website (granted it might not be up to date, but I doubt it) still advertises for as low as $1300 for a 2br.
