I am applying to a few schools for grad school including NYU, Johns Hopkins and Cornell. I am married with a family of 4. The programs are full time programs so I may be working part-time in the form of internships. The programs range anywhere from 1 year to 2 years.
For NYU, where are some safe areas to live near the campus? I have elementary school considerations, so good schools are a major factor. Any specific apartment complexes (or other forms of housing options) names would be helpful. Thanks so much for any feedback.
have you been to nyu? you mention "campus" but there really is no campus. People commute from all over the city to attend NYU.
Also - what is your budget? It sounds like you need a 2BR+ to accomodate a family of 4. Family friendly areas w/ good schools and close to NYU (i'm thinking Tribeca) are super expensive. 2BRs can easily be in the 4K to 5K/month range.
Riverdale could work, as would Eastern Queens, but you would have a longer commute to Manhattan. Manhattan is going to be the most expensive, and with overcrowding in some elementary school classes, the prospect of not going to the preferred school can be an issue. District 26 in Queeens has the highest rated neighborhood schools in the city, and the area of District 10 in Riverdale is also good. Park Slope has a good elementary school, but it's crowded, and the prices are not much less than you would find in Manhattan, when looking for family apartments, not full-amenity, luxury apartments. Forest Hills is also a consideration, though if you're planning to keep a car, you're better off in Eastern Queens or Riverdale.

Bump Up - I got accepted to NYU. Waiting back from Cornell, but need to start preparing. Any other places to live with good elementary schools? Someone mentioned New Jersey, will this work?
Some districts in NJ are great, but they're not going to be just across the river. Jersey City, Hoboken, and the other urban areas of NJ across the Hudson tend to attract singles, and there are still areas that have not fully gentrified. For good schools, you would need to look upriver, around the Fort Lee/Englewood Cliffs area. You could also live further out in NJ if you did not mind commuting through Penn Station.

Since NYU is in the Village and the Village is pretty safe, maybe you can find an apartment there and it's so much easier to go to school and have all the restaurants and stores around you. Also, if it fits in your budget, 5th Avenue is also a nice place to live. And you didn't mention if you would bring your family with you. Otherwise, personally, I would just live on NYU campus because it's so much cheaper.
Family is coming. I am considering Eastern Queens area like Douglaston and Little Neck. Still have not heard back from Cornell, but NYU is my second choice.
