I was planning to go on a weekend trip to Block Island, leaving NYC on Saturday and coming back Sunday evening. But I am reading about that ferry ride beibg terribly rough. I get sea sick and panic attacks! If I did this I would drive to CT and catch the Ferry from there.
So is it really as bad as they say?

I've done the LI Sound Ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson several times. The rides have been flawless. Drive the car right on and be on your way shortly - no BS NYC traffic. If you get seasick and nervous, sit inside the ferry so that you don't have to look at the water. Not rough at all.

Long Island Sound is different, this is an ocean ferry. The only consoling thing is that its an hour

I get seasick and use the New London ferries frequently. If the weather is really bad -- windy, pouring rain, choppy seas -- the ferry ride will be bouncy. 99% of the time the crossings are smooth and uneventful.

Have you considered going to Block Island from New London? You can catch Acela out of NYC and it drops you off right near the ferry terminal.

There's pills you can take for motion sickness. My mother takes them whenever she gets on a boat. She lives. And she hates bridges - not matter how large or small, boats, planes, pretty much everything except for her own backyard. She also gets motion sickness while driving. I haven't figured that one out! If you get nausea, try the pills. Don't work yourself up about the travel. Try to enjoy it and not think about it. If you work yourself up, you'll end up panicing. There's no help for that really on a boat. You could take a mild sedative beforehand as long as you're not driving. Do NOT take any meds that have the slightest chance of causing drowsiness if you are driving and going alone.
