I only drove through it a few years ago and it seemed nice, small and naturally beautiful. Seemed like a simple lifestyle could be lived. However, there are virtually no white collar business/financial jobs in that area.

What is your opinion on it?

Just any area, it has areas/communities that are nicer than others. Vestal, Endwell, Chenango and the Southwestern and Western(south of Main Street) of the city of Binghamton are nicer areas that come to mind. You do have some white collar jobs there due to the institutions of higher learning, the hospitals and companies like IBM, Endicott Interconnect, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and NYSEG, among a few others.

Like everywhere, it has plenty of pros along with some cons. The city itself is iffy, there has been a somewhat sizable influx of poverty and crime. The three year average of the violent crime rate from 2003-2005 was 360.9, the three year violent crime rate average from 2010-2012 was 601, not to mention 2012 being an all time high for the city reaching 664. The burglary rate has had a similar surge too, from '03-'05 the average rate was 489, from '10-'12 it was 977.6 and like the violent crime, reached an all time high in 2012 with a rate of 1,168.4. Of course, those are still manageable rates, but the spikes are concerning. The city has positives too, two minor league sports teams(The Binghamton Senators and the Binghamton Mets) it has an opera, a downtown art scene, affordable housing and some beautiful real estate. Broome County as a whole is very nice, Endicott and Johnson City are both largely very nice, Vestal provides a ton of commercial shopping, entertainment etc., new homes and great schools. Beautiful country scenery mixed with a solid urban area and suburban areas it has a nice mix. A top university, some excellent hospitals among other features. Like you said, the downfall of places like IBM and EIT along with Lockheed cutting down really hurts, the job growth has been stagnant for a while now.

Also OP, the nicer parts in and just outside of Endicott(high Italian Anerican population) or Vestal(viewed as the area's nicest/most affluent municipality) may be up your alley given the criteria you have been looking for in the past. Perhaps Vestal right across the river from Endicott would offer a middle ground.

It sounds like a nice, peaceful area to live. However, when I search for tax jobs, all that comes up is H&R Block, which is not commensurate with my education and experience level. Bummer.

What about something like this? INFORMATION ANALYST (Financial Analyst) - Greene, NY - Indeed Mobile

Or this? ACCOUNTANT - Greene, NY - Indeed Mobile

STAFF ACCOUNTANT (Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc.) - Greene, NY - Indeed Mobile

Greene is about 20-30 minutes from Binghamton down Route 12, depending where you live in the area. Suburbs like Port Dickinson/town of Dickinson, Nimmonsburg/Chenango Bridge/town of Chenango and Hillcrest/town of Fenton are closer to Greene.

There are some nice towns in the area. The city itself, really only the West side has anywhere decent to live, and generally towards Riverside = good, towards Main = not good.

The downtown is slowly improving with the influx of students now living there, but it's got a long way to go, IMO.

Isn't a good chunk of the East Side pretty solid too?

The first job might be achievable, although I don't have an MBA, but I do have an MSA. Sounds like an interesting job, too.

The second job I am not qualified for because I'm not a CPA.

The third job might be achievable, but I don't have the exact type of experience they are looking for (i.e. project and inventory accounting). They would have to train me or give me time to develop those new skills.

But those are somewhat decent finds! Those would be considered a mild career change, so there may be other people already directly in those fields that have an upper hand over me. But you never know.
