Hello. I am looking into buying a house with a pool. I have 8y.o. boy who loves water, and frankly I would love to have a pool for myself as well, since summer in NY can get pretty hot.
Would you please advise if the taxes are higher for houses with the pool, also how cumbersome is pool maintenance and up keeping.

Thank you.

An inground pool does increase property taxes.

Maintenance and upkeep is relative.

Cons:
You have to close the pool every winter and open it every summer.
You have to adjust PH and chemical levels.
Chlorine has to be added. Filters have to be backwashed.
You have to run a filter (electric cost and repairs when it breaks down).
Pool needs to be vacuumed regularly.
Things break eventually - cost of repairs.
You have a young child who likes the water. That requires extra vigilance on your part.

Pros:
You have your own pool
Great place to entertain.
Great place to relax.
Great place for your kid to swim without having to trek to a public pool or beach.

Some people dread the though of one or more of these items.
Others don't mind it at all.

Personal preference.

Rather than having the expense and headaches of swimming pool ownership, taxes and maintenance, I suggest looking for a house in a Pocono lake community. You'll enjoy lake swimming and boating and many communities have large outdoor swimming pools in addition and some even have indoor pools for cold weather enjoyment. Many house bargains now in Pocono lake communities.

Or near the Finger Lakes, one of the Great Lakes or other lakes like Lake George, Oneida Lake, Lake Champlain, etc.
