"Whether it is in the classroom or the tennis court, Masami Surisawa strives to be the very best. Albany High's top tennis player showed once again last week to be the best Section II has to offer.
Seeded No. 1 for the Section II singles tournament, Surisawa breezed his way into capturing a second straight championship at Schenectady's Central Park as the senior defeated Niskayuna freshman Zain Choudry 6-1, 6-3 in the title match.
Up next for Surisawa, now 21-0 this season, is his third appearance at the state tournament being held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing May 31.
For his efforts, Surisawa has been selected as the Times Union's Boys' Athlete of the Week for the period May 13-19.
When it comes to the classroom, Surisawa also has few equals as he is an honor's student. He applies study to his opponents on the courts as well, a practice that has served him well in securing back-to-back sectional titles.
Surisawa cruised to a trio of easy wins in his first three matches that were held in a one-set, first-to-10 games format. The senior prevailed in his first two outings 10-0 and won the third match 10-1.
In the quarterfinals, Surisawa defeated Niskayuna's Jeremy Burstyn 6-0, 6-1. The semifinals brought together two familiar foes as Surisawa met Albany Academy's Krishnadhev Jammula, the 2022 Section II champion. They played for a second straight year in the 2023 final with Surisawa winning. This year, the Albany star prevailed 6-3, 6-3 to earn a trip to the title match vs. Choudry.
Already assured of a third straight tournament berth entering the final, Surisawa made sure his final scholastic trip to Flushing at the end of the month would be as a sectional champion as he knocked off Choudry in straight sets."
