I plan to buy a 4- or 5- bedroom house in one of the 3 towns in the near future. My criteria for the location are:
1) top school district
2) easy access to midtown Manhattan
Yes, there are some other towns which satisfy the two criteria, but the 3 towns are quite typical. One in NJ (west), one in LI (east), and the other in Westchester County (north). Staten Island doesn't not have school districts as good as the three, so there is no option from (south).
Great Neck's pro: near the bay. It would be wonder to have a house from which I can see the bay.
Scarsdale's pro: compared with Great Neck, it's on "mainland" USA so I assume better traffic. compared to Milburn, no need to cross Hudson River.
Milburn's pro: as a gun enthusiast, it's easier and faster to get and maintain firearm license in NJ. The 15-round magazine capacity limit is sufficient for most handguns while NY has a 10-round limit. Living on "mainland", it will be much easier to drive to the rest of the country.
If OP wants easy access to Midtown, would go with Scarsdale. Should definitely check off the snob appeal box (if OP has one) . Commuting with train - easy as pie. Metro North express trains to Grand Central in 20 minutes. Am thinking Millburn and Great Neck aren't as accessible as Scarsdale. LIRR is night and day night in comparison to Metro North.

Your suggestions are appreciated.
You can combine Great Neck's and Scarsdale's pros (as you have listed them) in Rye with a house on, or within view of, the Sound (same body of water as Great Neck). Big money but by looking at these three towns, you will need a lot of money in any event.

Thanks. Rye seems to be a good choice! I like a town near water. But I doubt I can afford a house just near the water.
A home in Great Neck with a view of the sound will cost you well over $3 mill. Maybe $4 mill now that I think about it. The LIRR to Penn is usually ok. Express is 27 minutes. Sometimes there are delays getting home but the morning trains are usually OK. Great Neck is a very religious town (many Orthodox Jews). Nothing wrong with that just be aware. We are not orthodox and are trying to move out after 7 years. Also big Persian population. Manhasset and Plandome and Port Washington are also water towns on the same LIRR line. Manhasset has better schools than Port. Good luck!
