Lots of areas on the NJ side where homes/rents may be cheaper and less than a 2 hour commute to NYC.
More upscale: Montclair, Ridgewood, West Orange, Maplewood, South Orange, many others
Less $ but generally safe: Nutley, Saddle Brook, Secaucus, Leonia
Urban: Ironbound section Newark, Kearny, Harrison, JC, Elizabeth
More space, but longer commute: Summit, Springfield, Westfield, Livingston, Parsippany
You can get to Manhattan from anywhere east of 287 (for the most part) in well under 2 hours.
