Urban: Ironbound section Newark, Kearny, Harrison, JC, Elizabeth
More space, but longer commute: Summit, Springfield, Westfield, Livingston, Parsippany

You can get to Manhattan from anywhere east of 287 (for the most part) in well under 2 hours.
