I honestly don't have any idea where in NY I'd want to live, but let me give you a little information about myself and my family and perhaps some of you can enlighten me and steer me in the right direction of places to consider.

I guess employment wise I'd consider myself 'blue collar'. We're active, so we'd want to be in a place with some 'life' to it. Sports for all ages, parks, entertainment, nightlife, but also we'd want to live in an area where we're not necessarily 'side by side' with neighbors, I don't have to live in the "active" area just close by. We've kind of got a 'country living' mentality with the interest of being 'city active'.

Some of the things that would be important is, safe neighborhoods, good schools, job market, and of course the other items I listed above.

feel free to ask me any questions if it'll help you help me. Thanks in advance.

Are there any parts of the state that you have looked into?

When you say “blue collar”, what does that mean in terms of skills/experience?

What about area/town/city size?

I ask these questions because just about any “decent” sized area in the state could fit.

Why NY? I'd probably be heading south if I were you.

I am a fellow PA-er too, and considering a NY move. I have a feeling that the Capital District (Albany to Saratoga Springs) is a catch all kind of location, and you should be able to find a location there that works. Please keep us updated in this thread about what you find.

I’m also thinking that exurbs/small towns in the Buffalo area would work, given the original post.

I would advise moving South as well.

But, the OP isn't me and perhaps has different ideas. So this is as good a suggestion as any. There are plenty of suburb/exurb areas of buffalo that would fit your description.

If you have any questions just ask

If you want a strong blue collar job market, you won't find that in NY.

As far as areas in the Capital Region that could work, Cohoes, Watervliet, and Rennselaer could work. They're blue collar areas that are large enough to have a neighborhood type feel, but within a 10 minute drive you're in the "country" type of setting.

Where in PA are you coming from? This may help manage expectations.

It looks like Williamsport according to the location posted in the upper right corner of the original post.

Manhattan is close to life and everything + jobs +
