As vintage as it might seem...get a paper map of Broome county. If your needs are..modest commute to SUNY, decent home, schools, room for a garden, room for kids to play..on that map..draw a line and look north of Watson Blvd for Endwell..look north of Pine St for Endicott, north of Harry L drive for Johnson City. Vestal is spread out into the hills along the Vestal Parkway/ rt434. Those areas will have a number of nice places under $150k.
I love paper maps! I’ll check out those areas, thank you!
School district maps also help in terms of where to look in the area. There are also resources that allow you to see things like income at the census tract or census block group level. An example: http://www.usa.com/school-district-3629610.htm
Something like a short term rental will require some digging to find out..Contact local realtors who handle rentals...just dont get cornered into making them your only contact for a home purchase.
There are 2 suite motels in Vestal: Residence Inn by Marriott and Comfort Suites. You may be able to get a weekly rate. For how long will you need temporary housing?
Won't be totally surprised if you don't get some negativity on this move to the southern tier (Broome and surrounding counties). With or without this covid "thing"..I have found(through my travels) that NO area of the U.S. is absolutely perfect. Some may come close..but that's only if you are extremely well heeled.
One facet of living here , brings what I consider an unsaid plus of the southern tier..that is our location. 3-4 hours to NYC, 3-6 hours to beaches(R.I., NJ, L.I.), 4 or so hours north to Canada...RT81 N/S and 17/now86 E/W run through this area making travel to other locations convienent. Finger Lakes region..just to our west, Catskills just to our east, the Adirondacks..3 hours north. Btw...not sure what west coast location you are moving from...but NONE of the routes mentioned(except down by NYC) involve heavy/slow moving traffic.
I know this isin't your main concern right now...housing is...just thought I would add this in.
..and..another small? plus....Looking at a map..you will see what I said about our area being "inbetween" popular 2nd home/tourist areas. Why that matters?. With our current crisis, there has been a surge in 2nd home buying in those areas I mentioned....(or so my realtor friends and family tell me). Prices for homes in the Finger Lakes, Catskills, Hudson Valley(going due north from NYC), and Adirondacks, all have gone UP since "you know what" hit the fan in March..but not really much at all in the southern tier.
