My NYS Identification Card is expiring soon. The last one I got was 4 years ago and I remember going to the DMV and doing it and I believe I paid 8 dollars for 4 years.

I also got a letter maybe a bit more than a month ago that said I have to renew it because it is expiring. I didn't get a chance to see the letter myself because I'm not there now but was told I got a mail like this.

My question is, whenever I'm back in NY and have that letter, what are my options? Could I just renew it through the mail and if so, how would I even pay? Is it by check? Could I do it online? What if I want a new photo? The easiest way is to just go to the DMV and get a new one right? There you would be asked if you want a new photo or the old one? But could you get a new photo without going to the DMV physically or that isn't possible? I assume everyone all just go directly to the DMV when they need to renew?

Also could I go to the DMW before my card expires? Do most people do that? No issue with going after it right? Also how long does it take for you to receive it by mail? I remember years ago, it took maybe 10 business days?

Thank you.

I have a question for you, does it state your address on this ID like a drivers license does?

Are you still an NYS resident?

Yes it does state my address on it. However, i don't believe it's a real id? When i renewed it years ago, i remember just paying 9 dollars for it.

Yes i am still nys resident.

So you recommend me to go there or do it online or by postal mail? The only pro to going there would be i can get a new picture taken? Also there is no issue renewing it whether before or after my current one expires? Last time when i got it renewed, it was after it expired. Also walk in allowed or you have to do appointment? Which one is best for not long waiting?

Also does that mean if your id is expired, you have to go to the dmw to renew the nondriver id?

But if not, you can do it online?
