There are no direct flights between any combination of Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, or Albany. All flights between any two cities require a transfer through another city.
Yeah, which is kind of crazy. I know some people in Syracuse may go to other cities for lower rates on some flights, but just about everything tends to go to NYC, Charlotte, DC, etc., then elsewhere. You would think there would be flights that go directly to Pittsburgh from one of the bigger Upstate areas.
^In terms of Syracuse, there is a pretty big Asian food scene with Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Indian restaurant options. Between being a refugee resettlement and major college city, those things play a part in terms of having those options.
There are also multiple vegan/vegetarian restaurants or restaurants with such options as well. So, there is a diverse dining scene in the city/area.
With that said, I would look into suburbs like Williamsville/East Amherst/Amherst all in the town of Amherst outside of Buffalo as a starting point due to what I mentioned earlier and it is a nice area with relative diversity in terms of area suburban communities.

Things like this p*sses me off. I've always thought that the upstate region, with no one city large enough to be a major city on it's own, should work together on certain items. ONE regional airport would have so many more direct flites.

There would need to be more than one regional airport though.
It just is odd that there are no flights to Pittsburgh from any of the bigger Upstate airports. Syracuse when US Air and it’s forerunner was around had flights to Pittsburgh(US Air was founded in Pittsburgh).
Hoping to keep the longest drive under 5hrs 30mins. I'd also give Amtrak a try if we pick one of the cities with a train station. Probably wouldn't take the train every time but it's an interesting option to have.
Location relative to the offices is obviously important, but I need to balance that with picking a place where my wife and I will be happy. We made a short wishlist, and I'm guessing Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse will have these things but probably some smaller cities and large suburbs do too, let me know.
Our wishlist is:
Lots of good restaurants including sushi/Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Greek/Mediterranean, vegan/vegetarian, organic/healthy.
Unique community events like WaterFire in Providence https://waterfire.org/
Large gym like YMCA or JCC with classes, lap pool, hot tub, and steam room.
Big beautiful library.
All of the above we'd want very close to home, and then another thing we like to do is rent a boat or jet ski for a day, so if we could do that within 45mins-1hr of home that would be nice.

The thing is that even most of the smaller cities mentioned offer most of this on the list. Most offer diverse restaurant options to some degree. Not off the top of my head or necessarily like WaterFire, most have plenty of festivals. Most have both a Y and a JCC. All likely have a big beautiful library. The water activity aspect can be done pretty much anywhere within minutes due to so many lakes nearby.
On a side note and due to some things you’ve mentioned, towns outside of the cities besides Amherst outside of Buffalo that offer some relative diversity and tend to be generally highly regarded are Brighton outside of Rochester; DeWitt(particularly the portion in the Jamesville-DeWitt SD) outside of Syracuse and Vestal outside of Binghamton, among some others. All three of those areas are known for their Jewish populations, along with having relatively big Asian(East and South) populations; with visible/decent sized black and to a lesser degree Hispanic populations with good schools. Those three seem to have or have a strong connection to a college/university nearby or in the town as well. I guess parts of the town of Ithaca(surrounds the city of the same name) near Cornell would apply as well(I.e.-Northeast Ithaca(cdp)). So, those are some specific towns/communities within areas that make sense for relocation.

I don't know if there is an event exactly like the fire water in Providence. I know there is a lot going on, creating more public spaces along the river, so something similar may be coming. Here is a list of some of the activites that happen around town.
It looks like there are multiple places that fit our wishlist. So now I'm looking for points of differentiation other than obvious stuff like population size.
