Apalachin, New York, is basically a suburb between Endicott and Owego, New York. Located adjacent to Route 17, and runs alongside the Susquehanna River. It's basically a bedroom community. Residents travel to Owego, or to Sayre, PA, or the Binghamton area for employment. Schools are affiliated with the Owego-Apalachin School District, which is an up and coming school district due to the influx of hi-tech workers at the Lockheed-Martin Plant in Owego. This plant is building the next fleet of new Presidential helicopters, so there's a lot of well-educated staff buying houses in the Owego, and Apalachin area. Plus, just West on Route 17, maybe 20 or so miles away is the world-renowned Guthrie Clinic which is home to a wide array of state -or-the-art medical care and staff.
Taxes in Tioga County are lower than in neighboring Broome County so it's an attractive area for housing. Houses tend to be in new-ish developments, or located along some county two lane road, thereby giving you some land if you want it. Are also some apartment complexes.
It's a safe community; relies upon the County Sheriff or New York State Troopers for police protection and has a volunteer fire department.
You'll be traveling to Owego, or nearby Vestal, New York for shopping, entertainment, restaurants, and most medical care. The Finger Lakes are nearby and have abundant opportunities for boating, biking, camping, wine tours, and closer in are several quality, beautiful county parks with the same boating, biking, camping, etc., opportunities.
Weather is typical New York State....beautiful summers and fall. Winter can be snowy and bitter cold, or not. Spring is usually cold, damp, rainy. Lots of cloudy days, especially in the winter. But, when it's sunny and warm, it's great!
Definitely a good place to live and raise a family.
Apalachin is a nice place. It's pretty spread out. They do have the travel plaza, the restaurant, and the new hotel. They also have the Fireman's Field Days in June, which is really cool. It's a carnival-type of thing.
One word of caution though....if you're planning on buying a house, make sure you look into it completely. Apalachin was one of the towns that got hit pretty hard by the flooding last year. A fair amount of homes were damaged.
We visited Apalachin a few weeks ago and are looking to buy a house, but have some concern about the flooding. Historically, which areas are hit the hardest by flooding? How often does major flooding occur? Which rivers, etc. are typically the first to overflow? Guess we'll look for a house on a hill and keep our fingers crossed.
