North Rockland HS, Rockland girls track all-stars: Modupe Outdoor Athlete of Year: https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/h...r/70355216007/

"North Rockland coach Orlando Rivera calls Dami Modupe a "track nerd."

That pretty much sums up her love for/interest in the sport.

It doesn't hurt that she also happens to be very, very good in it.

Modupe was named Journal News/lohud Rockland Girls Indoor Track Athlete of the Year earlier this year after placing first in the public school 55 hurdles and second against all schools.

Some high school track kids take their foot off the gas pedal their senior year, particularly if they're already committed to running for a college program and don't need more personal bests or top rankings to impress collegiate coaches.

But already committed to running for Division I Binghamton University next year, Modupe not only didn't take her foot off the gas pedal this spring but rather floored it.

She ran personal-best times in both the 100-meter hurdles and 100 dash.

Modupe, who expected to finish second at the Rockland County championships in the open 100 to Nyack star Amber McDonald instead clocked 12.49 to beat her to the line by .03.

Two weeks later, Modupe slashed her 100 time to a personal-best 12.14.

But it was in the hurdles, an event Modupe didn't take up until her junior year, that she really excelled and which secured her selection as Journal News/lohud Rockland Girls Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.

Modupe won the Rockland County girls championship in the 100 hurdles, then repeated as Section 1 Class AA champ before qualifying again for the state championships.

A year earlier, she medaled in fourth place among hurdlers from large public schools and medaled in seventh place in the state Federation, a division that includes athletes from private and public schools of all sizes.

This year, Modupe won the large-school public crown, clocking 14.36. Then, despite a slow start, she ran 14.38 to win silver in the Fed championship.

Oh, and she also ran the third leg on North Rockland's 4x100 relay, which captured bronze in both the state public school and Federation divisions.

For the spring, she finished with the second fastest time (14.23) among high school girls in New York in the 100 hurdles and seventh fastest time (12.14) in the 100.

But Modupe's impact at North Rockland extended beyond fast times.

"She is very passionate about the sport," Rivera said. ... "That passion always led to great energy at practice and it set the tone for the entire girls team. Made my job easier."

Modupe, who pointed to her hurdles performance at states as being her spring highlight, especially since she was also doing the relay, said, "For me, I just thank god for helping me through the spring. It was long and hard and I was able to push through."

Rivera believes her times will continue to fall in college, explaining, "Loving something is the key to long-term success."

Modupe, who noted her approach is to take losing performances and use them as motivation for the next race, chose Binghamton over multiple other colleges because of the school's emphasis on academics.

"They actually care about the student rather than the athlete more," she said.

Modupe's taking on a big challenge in competing on a Division I level while majoring in nursing with a minor in education.

But it seems likely she'll tackle the classroom and track in similar fashion.

Explaining success in track, Modupe said "It's actually the grit and determination you put in every single race."

From Iona Prep in New Rochelle, Westchester/Putnam boys track all-stars: Top sprinter Marcus Nahim leads strong group: https://www.lohud.com/story/sports/h...e/70333093007/

"Marcus Nahim started running track for one reason. "Track was supposed to help my endurance for soccer," he said. And that it did. But it also helped him discover a talent that might be bigger than his talent on the soccer field.

The Ossining resident, who recently capped four years of running track for Iona Prep, is The Journal News/lohud Westchester/Putnam Boys Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. There are ample reasons why.

Nahim, who's so good at both soccer and track that he'll do the unusual and compete in both sports on the Division I level in college, finished second in the state Federation (all size schools, both private and public) championship in the 200 sprint earlier this month. He also anchored Iona Prep's state Federation-winning 4x100-meter team. Nahim had the second fastest time in the 100 during prelims at states but stopped competing in the 100 by getting DQ'd to save himself for the other races.

He finished his high school career with the third fastest time of the season among New York high school boys in the 200 at 21.4 and the 10th fastest in the 100 at 10.72. His Iona Prep relay was also the fastest in the state, running 41.55.

He calls being able to pursue both soccer and track in college a blessing and there's little wonder why the Bearcats would want him for both. Last fall, during Iona Prep's Senior Night homecoming game against Regis, the Gaels trailed 2-0 with five minutes left. But in a three-minute span, Nahim scored three times to give his squad the win. "I hadn't felt that hyper-excited in a long time. It was a whole flourish of emotions," he recalled.

But the excitement continued in winter with Nahim anchoring Iona Prep's indoor 4x200-meter relay team to a state Federation title. In that race, Nahim had to overtake Cardinal Hayes's anchor, who got the baton in the lead. Nahim, with a huge closing kick, won the race for the Gaels by just .17 of a second.

Nahim, who plans to major in computer science at Binghamton with a minor in media or photography, credits sports with "developing his mental fortitude," explaining, "When I was younger, I didn't deal with losses well."

One of five children (his younger sister, Zara, plays soccer and runs for Hackley), he also credits both family and coaching for much of his athletic success. He uses the word "blessing" again in describing head coach Jan Mitchell's decision to hire Dom Zanot as sprints coach, a move that totally transformed Gael sprinting.

Nahim, also pointed to his dad, Clarence, who grew up playing soccer in Sierra Leone, for hammering home the message, "You always have to give 110%, no matter whether people are watching because everybody can give 100%."

Now, Nahim, who explained the message goes on to ask, "What more can I do to differentiate myself?" will continue to work on that answer in college, noting he'd like to possibly pursue track professionally if he improves to that level."
