The Altima was originally 4 cylinder equipped only so as to differentiate it from the Maxima. But the problem was that with Nissan's offerings, the Altima was smaller than a Camry or Accord, but the Maxima was priced considerably higher than the CamCord, which left Nissan with missing the "sweet spot" of the midsize sedan market.

So Nissan had to make the difficult decision to move the Altima a bit higher in the market to better compete with the Toyota and Honda counterparts. They're probably better off even at the expense of the Maxima - which is squeezed between the Altima and the Infiniti G series sedan.

I've owned 2 Maxis (98 & 09) and have loved them.... The new gen to me is absolutely hideous from the grill to the side profile lines and the attempt at a floating roof. I won't touch this car or any nissan until the design language is changed substantially.

FWD + CVT ≠ 4 door sports car

I'm not gonna lie, I do like the new gen Maxima's styling but I'm not thrilled that they decided to pair it with a soulless CVT. If Nissan claims that it still is the "4-Door Sports Car", then pair it with a manual or hell a traditional automatic.

We put my Wifes '14 Maxima into the "Sport" Mode and it seems to perform pretty good....and it does also have a "Manual" Mode.
