before he died, i used to go to my 84-year old great uncle's house and drink aristocrat vodka with him, and listen to him ramble on, and tell me crazy stories (lies) about his life. I was 25 and he was just a lonely old dude whose drinking buddies were all dead, and needed somebody he could talk "guy talk" with. He had a wild streak in him until the day he died.
he made a pretty good wingman. if we were ever out, which was rare, he'd find a cute girl my age sitting by herself, hobble over and say something like, "Honey, you got puuurty teeth." She'd start laughing, he'd walk off, and i'd come over... introduce myself, "sorry, he's a little bit crazy.. what is your name?.." etc.
Ok, I may be able to somewhat answer this... I'm 40 and work with all men and women ranging in age 23 - my age. Mostly being the younger crowd. We are all friends, we all hang out, we even have cookouts and / or go to the club on occasion. In my case I have other friends but my friends here at work are all a load of fun, we spend 8+ hours a day together and it gives us a chance to get to know each other and they learn from me and vice versa... I look at them like younger siblings I never had and surprisingly, most of them are very mature and the point being, we have a good time.
In the OP's case, I would guess maybe they found SOME common ground but that's a really big age difference.

When I was 21 I had an 80 year old neighbor I loved visiting better than any of my friends. I thought she was so wise and funny. I loved her dearly. I still think of her all these years later. In fact, when I moved back to the area I tried to find her grave to place flowers on it.
As for this case, it sounds odd to me. Not enough info, but then, I haven't read all rsponses yet.

What do you mean by "hanging out"? Is it going to dinner or to the club? If a 50 year old is clubbing with a 22 year old....that's weird (and kind of pathetic on the 50 y.o.'s part).
If it's just dinner or visiting each other, I see nothing wrong with that. I've learned alot from people much older and wiser than myself.
When I was 18, I remember this gal that was in her late 20`s, hangin` out with us, and I always thought that was a little strange, but she seemed to enjoy the "extra attention" that she was oldest.
