Under China's New Elderly Rights Law, Woman Ordered To Visit Mother Once Every 2 Months

The daughter of a Chinese grandmother has been ordered to visit her at least once every two months, in the first case under a new law to protect the elderly, reports said on Tuesday.

"Leaning on a cane" the woman, 77, "hobbled to the plaintiff's seats" at a court in Wuxi, which heard the case against the daughter and her husband on Monday, the Wuxi Daily reported.

It's shameful that a court has to order a child to see an elderly relative. However, if these visits are being forced it may end up being negative for the grandmother/mother. Hope this women will be kind while there.

How can a parent really enjoy the thought of children visiting out of governmental force?

Good point. Does China still have the one child only law or is that just rumor? If so, I suppose the parents will take it anyway they can get it. Must be lonely when you have very few relatives and then the few you have refuse to visit. If they do have more than one child then I don't understand the point of this law.

The one child law means that one person is responsible for 2 parents and 4 grandparents - alone. Also, any great-grandparents who may be living.

China still has the one child rule is still in force except in one of the partners in the marriage is only child then they can 2 children. In China children (especially sons) are expected to take care of their parents in old age and it is problematic for those who have lost their own child.
