I didn't know where else to post this.

My younger brother is graduating from university and i was thinking of getting him an engraved gold pen.
Good gift? one person i talked to said "this is the stupidest thing to gift ever and these people who make it are dull" and then she goes "Now i know why your single". I wanted to slap her so hard, her other side of the face would be red as hell. I mean just say you dont think its a good gift thats all.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Would it be a good gift? If not, what should i get?

Thanks

Is an engraved gold pen something your brother would actually use? My husband uses pens a lot, but he is over 60!

If hearing opinions anger you so much. why bother asking for them?

I don't think she was angry by the opinion, but the way it was delivered was incredibly insulting.

My step son is graduating from college. We are going with cash.

Well, our son is graduating from college. He will receive a card and a nice lunch. His gift has been our financial (and other) support for 21 years. He is graduating debt free and received a car in high school. Those two things alone give him a nice start in life. We've also paid to take him on an apartment hunting expense as he will be moving 1600 miles away. We'll also help him with the expenses associated with getting him out there.

For your brother, I might suggest a nicely engraved tie clasp or something similar. He may not need to wear ties often in the future, but it seems like whenever my son or husband need to wear a tie we are searching for the clasps. Maybe if it is nicely engraved your brother will keep it.

You can also engrave things like pocket knives and money clips, if he is more inclined to use those.

I received an engraved pen as a gift when I graduated HS. I still have it some where but I think I only used it once or twice. Not my favorite gift.
I agree with getting him something engraved, but maybe not a pen. Maybe a nice watch?

A watch would be better than a pen. I mean a pen, it's a nice thought but not a very useful gift.

A pocket watch might be cool, because that kind of engraving looks nice and gives it character. Or a wristwatch is fine too.

When I graduated college with my undergrad, people just gave me cash, mostly. I'm hoping to get nice cards and greetings when I finish grad school but I'm not expecting anything else.

I don't own a pocket watch, but I've always liked them, so I think this is a good idea. But wrist watches are back in style, so that would be ok as well.

Or cash (not very thoughtful) or something related to his future career.
