I was remembering some times this happened this morning and wondered if it's just me.

Back in the days when the original Motorola flip phone was the thing, a stranger at an auction where there were no pay phones asked if he could borrow mine to call his mom. I handed it to him and he made a brief call, handed it back and thanked me.

We were paying for cell service by the minute then, so his courtesy was appreciated.

I've been approached several times since then. Once was at the scene of an accident where I and some other motorists were detained briefly. A guy asked if he could borrow my phone. I stupidly thought he was late for his child's birthday party or something else important so I let him. He proceeded to call his office and have a nice long discussion with his assistant about her need to go to Costco to buy more toilet paper.

Another was at the Amtrak station in Eugene, where a woman asked if I had a cellphone. I briefly considered saying no, then thought "Why should I have to lie?" I said, "Yes, I have a cellphone but I no longer loan it to strangers."

She started shouting and swearing at me, waving her arms. Then she ran around the platform, taking people by the arm and pointing to me, the guilty non-sharer-of-cellphone person. I heard her say, "Please punch this person for me! Beat her up! She had the NERVE to be rude to me!" She was still acting crazy when my ride came.

Of course I let friends use it if they want but they all have their own phones. What about you?

It has never, ever happened to me. I don't carry my phone in my hand though, and I don't keep it glued to my head, so people would first have to ask if I even had one. (I do).

I have been asked a couple of times. My answer is always no.

maybe once in all the years I've owned a cellphone. Usually people want to know what time it is not to call someone. And no I'd wouldn't let any random stranger use it to call someone unless maybe there was an accident involved to let them call a family member or friend

There's only one time I can think of that I've been asked for the use of my cellphone and I've willingly granted it. I witnessed a motor vehicle accident, and checked on the driver of one of the cars. She was in pain, so I told her to stay where she was, stay still, and wait for the paramedics. She said she couldn't reach her phone and asked to use mine to call her husband.

I expect we would all do the same. That's the one time I'd make an exception to my "no strangers" rule.

Nope, but then I'm always forgetting to carry my phone, so that might explain it. Drives my family nuts!

I've never been asked that. If I was I would tell them I don't have a cell phone.

I discovered last wk I forgot my phone charging it.
YIKES! I had to call a friend to say when my movie was over so we
could both meet afterwards!

I am blonde, pretty and smiley..MY God, the ticket taker knows my name!
(He didn't have a phone on him, tho)...so, I asked a guy, 35, walking to get popcorn...
saying, 'I know this sounds crazy but I left my phone...blabla'...He acted like I was a street person asking for $5, really.
I said then, "You can dial the number...? It's just she's waiting for me to call..."...He looks all weird and says whats the area code?
I said, She lives a mile away, (so, ours)...

He heard me say..."I know you're not answering bec you don't know this number, but meet me at 2pm sharp...I forgot my phone. And this nice guy let me use his phone."

He STILL acted like no one EVER needed HELP before! Geeze!
He was so weirded out he could not even look me in the face...and it was an innocent, pretty face!
Calls to Europe are free now...what exactly was his problem, I sure don't know....
But I have a Midwestern/Minnesotan personality...Use my phone anytime...
esp inside a movie lobby or restaurant or store....what are you going to do.. run
out the door with it?

I thought ...'Is it this younger generation that doesn't know how to interact well,
due to so much texting and not enough real human contact?'...I did not know.

So you would actually lie?
I must have come from some other planet before here...it is called "Friendly".
This thread is a sad one for me...I won't be coming back here.
