I would've pitched them and washed my hands too. Just saw an old Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry got grossed out that someone took a magazine into the bathroom and then returned it to the hall table. He threw it out at the first opportunity.

I close the lid at home before flushing.

How's this for gross - my sister handed a report to a colleague as they passed in the hallway. It was something for him to review and return to her. He proceeded into the bathroom with it - stayed in there for ages

Depends on what they were...if these were Victoria Secret catalogues, then yes, they probably should be gingerly tossed into the bin ... and wash your hands after.

Also, anything food. I get grossed out bringing food into any restroom, especially if it's not completely sealed...imagine poop particles and hot **** fumes wafting about and settling into the food. Gross! I was actually hungry just now, but now I've lost my appetite. So thank you for starting this thread.

Once they left the restroom, they would have hit my trashcan too. I don't think I've ever seen reading material in a public bathroom. I don't think I ever want to see it either.

You did what I would have done, including the handwashing.

As far as having my toothbrush in the same room as the toilet, I don't. Both our upstairs bathrooms have separate toilet rooms.

IMO, you overreacted as do a lot of people when confronted with germs. Assuming you wash your hands before eating and such, the germs probably aren't that big of a deal. We do need some germs to develop proper immunity.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a germophobe. However given the length of time those catalogs were in the bathroom and the number of times that toilet must have been flushed, I felt they were past the point of no return. Furthermore I think there should be a distinction made between ordinary germs and fecal germs.

I know the drawback to that choice is that the bristles don't dry out between uses. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess.
Contrary to popular belief, putting the cover down has very little impact. Most toilet covers are not water or air tight.
