Do you find this typical of email correspondance? I just respond timely to emails I get; but so often people just don't. So, this has happened to me a few times; have you had simiar situations. How to handle? Ignore?

Childhood friend "CF", infrequent contact:

CF: "Dear WorldKlas, last time we touched base you were on a fitness plan and I wonder if you and I can keep in touch and support eachother

WK: "Delighted! How about every Wednesday we report back how many miles we walked in the past week"

CF: "Great idea, so excited!"

WK: week one.... "Hi CF, this past week I walked 18 miles...... How did you do"

No response, even with a couple of repeated inquiries and notes "if you couldn't get to it, that's ok, let's keep the ball rolling". Never heard back

2 years later:

CF: Dear WK, I just submitted a white paper for publishing if it gets enough reviews. Please do me the favor of reviewing it -- its 67 pages long and relates to the pschology of the American Voter. To view it First Register, then log in to (site, tab,2nd tab) and leave a detailed review.

**********************

Dog (rescue) adopter "DA" who I served as Adoption Counselor:

DA: "Dear WorldKlas, BooBoo is doing so well and loves other dogs. We noticed MiMi on your website and would love to meet her."

WK: "Dear DA, so happy to learn BooBoo is fitting in with your family, and would love to arrange a meeting with MiMi; since its been almost a year our group needs you to complete another application, which is as always free of charge. Here's the link"

No response

WK: "Dear DA, its been a few weeks since I contacted you about completing an application but nothing has come thru... Have you changed your mind? Our group uses the information on the new application to get updated info and your vet contact info to verify BooBoo is on heartworm preventative as required by your adoption contract. Please let me know if you have questions."

No response

4 weeks later: DA: Dear WK, we're going to wait until after the summer because we have lots of vacay plans ahead. But please keep us updated on MiMi's status; if you get another applicant for her we might go ahead and quickly do an application so we don't lose out on her....."

I find this typical with people who are users. They only contact you when they want something. It's a one-way street with them.

I think so too. To me it's rude to not respond. No response is not an answer!

OP, I think the childhood friend who ghosted for 2 years (!), then only popped up when s/he needed you to read a 60+ page paper and critique it should be told off cordially, but firmly. Or you could ask how much s/he is paying for your professional editing services.

I wouldn't even do that. I would just tell her what my fee is.

While I am very happy to help a friend with things within my skill set, I have several times told "free loaders" the standard fee for that service.

Agree with this. They come at you like they intend to meet you halfway, but when you show up with your investment, they're all of a sudden nowhere to be found.

I think they changed their minds about what they wanted from you and thoughtlessly did not tell you. I also think the comment about users is probably apt.

I don't think you need to reply to these people when they finally do recontact you. In the first instance, I'd just avoid meaningful contact with that person. In the other instance, if she does contact you--great. But of course you are under no obligation to hold Mimi for her. I suspect you will not hear from them again though. Or at least, not until they need another dog.

It sounds to me like the CF email asking you to review a paper was a "hack". Just out of the blue this person wants you to do this? Did the "CF" include links for you to click on? Hope you didn't if they were included in the email.

I know several folks who have my email address who I don't correspond with, usually because they don't use email. So when I get a random email from "Jane Smith" I always look at what the subject line says. EVERY time it is some screwball message, which tells me right off that the person's email has been hacked. I just delete it without opening.

Regarding the dog adopters, it sounds to me like they didn't want their business looked into again. The first time was all right, but things may have changed that were not positive in their lives. Also, they may not have wanted to invest any more money in adopting another dog.

It was not a hack; CF is a very political person and also posted on Facebook asking her FB friends to do the same thing.

My specific issue is in general people who just blow you off and then come back with demands/requests for favors.....
