Why do some people feel such a need to put in loads of time and energy into discussing other people's relationships and marriages? Not that it isn't an interesting subject but what's up with those who dedicate so much time to it? What do they gain from it?

There's nothing more fascinating to me than human relationships. There's so much ego driven self-delusion, moments of enlightenment, hypocrisy, negotiation, cheating, forgiveness, selfishness, generosity, compassion, drama, comfort, sense of belonging, loneliness and if you are lucky, overwhelming love.
Perhaps because the people in the relationships they're discussing are very important to them and a big part of their lives - like a child or a best friend. And if that relationship is going badly, it can affect people close to the couple or one of the two in the relationship. It can be hurtful and frustrating, for example, to see a close friend or sibling repeatedly get hurt by a SO and still stay in the toxic relationship. Sometimes everyone sees the likely negative outcome before the couple, and it can make you feel helpless to watch a train wreck occurring when you knew all along it would occur.
