If it's offered, sure. I help because that's what family does, yes. But if they thank me additionally in the form of a reciprocal favor, or money, nothing wrong with that.

If a person takes repeated advantage of a relative, like having them do taxes, for nothing beyond a verbal thank you, that's rude and often ends up breeding ill-will.

I have no family living within a long distance, but there are friends and neighbors who are like family to me. I consider it a blessing to be given the opportunity to use my abilities to help someone. There's a circle of my friends all over the region and many neighbors, who often help each other with all sorts of projects. We would be insulted if any of us ever offered to pay each other. But, there's times when we share costs for gas to travel together for shopping on the far side of town or dumping fees for non-recyclable trash. There have been countless moves we've made over the years, which involve a whole day of work or even two days and nothing but our meals were provided. And then when we need help ourselves, we've got this small, friendly army at our disposal.

My in-laws pay H to do work on the property or help with other technical tasks they're not skilled in. He doesn't refuse. My MIL paid H $100 to help fix their computers and printer a couple weeks ago.
