When it snowed my dad would hook up a hood behind his truck and pull all us kids around in the snow until we were almost frozen. Talk about bad parenting.
I'm amazed by all the smoking apologists who have posted on this thread. You'd think they owned stock in tobacco companies. Bad habits, especially those that cause unpleasantness or injury to others, should never be excused, because many others have them or they are trends of the times. Thankfully, I never went places where people smoked, when I was young. The practice has declined, but still persists. I cheer, whenever I hear of another facility or an entire city, that has banned smoking.
A lot of posters were raised in a time before people knew about second hand smoke where every you go there is smoking. It wasn't until the 90's that restaurants and other public places banned smoking. I'm guessing that the op was raised during the time when smoking wasn't banned.

Don’t be ridiculous. When we were children we had no choice about the culture we lived in and the acceptance of smoking everywhere, that was the reality then. Doesn’t mean we liked it or was against the policy changes when we were old enough to vote for them.
I was happy when smoking was banned in most places by the time I was raising my children ,but then I was parenting during an era that was finally educated on the dangers of smoking and second hand smoke.

Besides, the issue with second-hand smoke is that it affects people with constant exposure--kids of smoking parents, the employees who work in the bars and restaurants with smoking allowed, etc.
Being around smokers as a non-smoker might be annoying, but sitting in a smoky room for 45 minutes every so often is not what gives people cancer. Heck, you probably breathe worse walking down a busy city sidewalk or burning wood in your fireplace.
I remember walking through the supermarket smoking in the 80’s.
I remember people smoking in the hospital, including the doctors even when they were in the consulting room. There was no escaping it back in the day. Public in general had no understanding of second hand smoke being damaging, irritating yes,but damaging no.
My parents coerced me into going to the dentist. I still fear the dentist. Should I sue?
The OP said nothing about suing. She (I’m assuming) is bewildered as to why her parents would endanger her health that way, in much the same way that I needed to know why my father would drive drunk with us in the car.
Questions like these are part of the unpacking process where you find out what your childhood was really all about. Her question may sound stupid to you. It isn’t.
Perhaps you and everyone else who is having a grand old time laughing at and beating up on the OP should visit the psychology forum.
I don't think you were forced to go inside because your parents wanted company, they probably didn't want to leave you kids outside waiting in case you went missing or something.
On the other hand, this might have cultivated your bad feelings for smoke to not pick up on smoking, which isn't a bad thing after all.
My mother used to smoke while I was in the car as a child. This wasn’t even thought of as bad back in the 60’s and 70’s nobody was too concerned about it. Little did they know about cancer and the damage second hand smoke can do to some people. I did have severe asthma as a child though. I’m sure that contributed to it.
yea, well, my parents forced me to go to the dentist! Now that hurt!
OP-it so long ago. If it really bothers you, I respectfully suggest counseling.
On the rare occation that I was taken to the dentist he worked on my teeth without and anesthesia. Yeah that was fun.
