I remember before the total indoor smoking bans (and even after, thanks to places that were legally "outdoors"), my parents would force me to go to restaurants with bars that weren't separated from the rest ofthe restaurant and to baseball and football games where the concourse was legally "outdoors" but seemed indoors to me. My brother and I would object and express our concerns about second-hand smoke, but our parents just wouldn't listen. At the same time, our parents would say that we would be disowned if were ever caught smoking. To this day, I can't stand that my parents would force my brother and I go to inside smoke-filled places just to keep them company.

I don't think they did it for your company. I think there must have been some other reason.

I clearly remember their justification being,"We'd be lonely without you."

How old were you? Are you talking about 5 , 10, 14 years old?

I don't remember how old I was when the football game incident happened, but I remember that the indoor smoking ban went into effect when I was 11.

I no longer fear second-hand smoke to that extent, but I still resent the coercion.
