My family and I have never gone to a restaurant for any major holiday. We don't like to deal with the extra long lines. However, I know that a lot of people dont mind. Will any of you be having Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow with your loved ones at a restaurant?
Eating out at a regular downtown restaurant that will have a holiday turkey entree as a choice. In fact, they just called to confirm the reservation. Once we tried the big buffet, but the lines were horrible. So that year we ended up at an Indian buffet with turkey curry which we loved.
But Mom would not be happy at an Indian restaurant so we are going "normal" and she can have turkey or prime rib.
Making a reservation might cut down your wait time!
DH and I always host the feast, so no restaurant for us.
Reservations could help but not everywhere does that unfortunately. But that's ok with me: I prefer old-fashioned holiday meals at home or at a family member's home. I'd rather eat at a restaurant on a regular, non-holiday.
I used to be a waitress though and felt sorry for families and retirees who waited on extremely long lines year after year for Thanksgiving.
My mother loves to go to casinos so I'm taking her to one for Thanksgiving. No buffet though. At 90 she doesn't eat enough to make it worth the price. We're ordering the Thanksgiving entree at an attractive sit-down place. Their food is provided by the Sheraton Hotel kitchen which is on the resort property, so it's delicious. We've been there before and it was a big hit with Grams. When she gets tired of the slots, we go home to my clean kitchen!
We've only gone out once, but it was wonderful. They gave us a pie to take home after we said we were too full for dessert.
We had reservations, and didn't have to wait at all.
This is another year we would have gone out, but when I asked my only local sibling if he wanted to join us, he offered to host at his home.
We've gone to a restaurant on Thanksgiving plenty of times. I definitely wouldn't wait in line. I'd make a reservation. And I wouldn't go somewhere that doesn't take reservations.
Surprisingly, one of the better ones we've been to is Maggianos. It's done family style, and there's a TON of food. Definitely get your money's worth.
Tomorrow we'll be at the formal dining hall of my mother's retirement facility. It's a pretty swank setup. Probably will be as good as most any restaurant.
No.
I wouldn't eat out for Thanksgiving bc the meal is only 50% of it.
And it's not an abrupt stop/start situation.
There's the time we all hang out before and after, watching football, playing games, continuously eating all the while.
There is the anticipation of certain dishes, the fun of making things I only make once a year, etc.

I fully agree. You're totally right that it's about more than just the eating part (although that's a huge part). Like you said, a lot of great, memorable times also happen before and long after we all eat.
