I think property taxes and even auto insurance might be the biggest differences you'll see between NJ and NC. I grew up in Toms River and almost bought a 20 year old house in Forked River. Property taxes would've been $3,800/yr on a $260,000 1,500 sq ft house back in 2004...and I had a nice view of the Oyster Creek nuclear plant.

As a young 20-somethings, the cost to settle down and start a family in NJ was just not affordable.

That's when we moved to Raleigh. We bought a brand new 2000 sq ft house with an unfinished 3rd floor and paid $175K for it with property taxes around $1500 a year. The cost of living is much cheaper than jersey. That goes for auto insurance as well. For both of our cars, we paid about $3,500 yr. Bear in mind, I had about 4 pts on my license. Down here in NC, it was cut about 60%.

I moved from Vineland NJ in 2006 to Stanley county NC, and I love it, I just up and left and stayed at my fater- in- laws for one week. It is so much cheaper out here, and you can actually live comfortable. In Jersey we had a two bedroom trailer paying 900. a month, here we have a 4 bedroom house, a garage, a familyroom, and a living room and we pay 750. a month, my car insurance went from 300. a month to 150. every 6 month. My kids love it! The only down fall is The Hospitals are not as advanced as in Jersey, and the school systems are not as advanced as in Jersey. There is a job placement agency called staff masters theat will help you with a job. The website is StaffMasters - Our people mean business. and you can fill out an app. right online. Hope that helped.

Amen to what those who've already done the relo have said! Personally speaking, just about any place is better {living} than NJ. Mind you, you could very well become a halfback if you do wind up going to FL from NJ and wind up coming half way back up ;-)

Lightbulb other options...

You have already received a lot of good advice but I'll add that you may need to consider other options than the 2 cities you mentioned (if limited to those 2 my vote is for NC). If cold weather is a real issue for you Asheville NC is probably not your ideal location... the average temperatures are not much different than those of northern NJ. Asheville gets quite a bit colder than other areas of North Carolina.

I recommend that you use this website to help you come up with other cities for consideration (it narrows down choices based on your rankings on topics like climate, taxes, politics, entertainment, etc):Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

No jobs, boring, not much to do...but I've been here 14 years, lol.

If your resume looks like your post I understand why you're having trouble getting a job.

By the way, you're responding to an almost 5 year old post from someone who hasn't posted on the site in almost 4 years and apparently decided to move to FL, not NC. So I kind of doubt she'll "recieve" this.
