Hi All,

My girlfriend and I are beginning to research other states to move to. I have a few questions that Google just can't answer.

Why We Want To Move:
1) New Employment. (She is a Server / Event Planner and I am a Web Developer). How is the tech industry fairing down there?

2) I want to be close to a city, but just as close to parks, rivers, and lakes. (Hunting Fishing Camping) Is their any areas where I could leave my 9-5 and be fishing 40mins later?

3) We want to avoid certain types of people. Unfortunately as well as Pittsburgh is doing, you need to live close to the city for it to be affordable. With that comes a lot of problems with the types of people living in ALL of the areas just outside the city. Gangs, Hard Drugs, and generally undesirable people have infested every part of our city.

Do the areas outside of the major cities have lots of crime?

Other general questions:
How is public transportation into the cities from the Suburbs? Are most of the cities places where you pretty much HAVE to drive? Are taxis available after a night out? Will they go to most areas outside of the city (affordable)?

What is the night life like? Is the best place to go your local watering hole, or a big cultural district? Are their many night clubs? We like the small local bars, but like to dress up and go out too.

I know this is pretty general, and not really location specific, I guess I was really looking at Raleigh, but if you think somewhere else may be better, any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Since employment is an issue, the Piedmont region of the state is your best bet.

Major Urban Areas within the Piedmont Region

Charlotte
Raleigh
Greensboro
Winston-Salem
Durham
Fayetteville
Cary
High Point

The state's 2011 crime stats will be released in June of 2012.

Yes, you asked a lot of disparate questions, most of which have been answered in other threads if you peruse them for threads with "X" in the title (crime, employment prospects, etc). There is a forum Search Function, as well.

If you're only really considering Raleigh you should post in the Triangle subforum, not NC as a whole.

As a general answer, the cities in NC do not have the kind of gang problems you would find in a large city (yet?) and it's easy to avoid. Most NC cites have exploded in growth in the past couple of decades, so surrounding the cities are very suburban ("Wisteria Lane"-type) areas that are generally considered very safe (though it means cars are requisite to get anywhere--NC is kind of well-known for poor public transportation compared to other Eastern states).

You can find rural areas within 40 minutes of the city, sure--though the aformentioned surge of growth is creeping ever-outward, so those streams and lakes might be part of a cookie-cutter subdivision in a few years.
