My husband and I will arrive in Goldsboro, NC soon, I would like to know what to expect. I have never been to North Carolina nor has my husband.
I've read all the city-data, I would like to know your personal experience living In Goldsboro. What you like most. What you like least. And stuff like that.
Thanks

Not many regular posters here live in Goldsboro. I've driven through a couple of times, and know I would not want to live there. The main highways are flat, unattractive strips that cater to the military customers.
Good things about Goldsboro: 1. Pork barbecue restaraunts. 2. It's only a couple hours to the ocean. 3. You can probably find a nice neighborhood (or apartment complex) with a pool. You need the pool to cool off, as the summers are hot and humid.
We drive through, does not seem very interesting. There is some great barbeque there, and a very good and very large western store. My wife was underwhelmed by the two cloth stores there. Probably great if you have or start a family.
Like the Eagle said, it is not all that far from the beach, ez, but boring drive, and is about an hour from Raleigh, which has about every consumer driven desire possible, and as Barney told Andy, "They got good Chinese in Raleigh."
It is a small rural country town. I was stationed there from 2006-08 before I retired. Still have a house there I could not sell. The base is small. Base housing is new. Good selection of restaurants, Target, Sam's Club and Walmart. For major entertainment or shopping go to Raleigh. Service Sq. runs an AF Recreation Center south of Wilmington at Ft. Fisher. It is an decent affordable place to visit.
I lived in Goldsboro from 09-12 as the Marine Corps recruiter fro Wayne County and the surrounding areas so I know the are pretty intimately. The best thing about Goldsboro is how close you are to toher areas. You're less than two hours from the beach, you are less than an hour from Raleigh, and hour from Greenville. 4-5 hours from DC. 2.5 -3 hours from Myrtle Beach. Hour-hour and half from Wilmington. 30 minutes from the outlets in Smithfield. I was not impressed with the base itself. Not bad, i guess, but the worst base I've ever been on. The MWR and the exchange are the worst I've experinced as far as prices and selection.
If you have any specific questions on the area feel free to ask. Either here or via a private message.
This video and the comments pretty much sum up Goldsboro. I'm not sure where you are coming from but if you're into "city life" for lack of a better term, you're probably not going to like it very much.

That says a lot coming from a Marine. I was assigned to a Marine unit at Quantico for three years and lived in base housing. I've never seen anything worse than that, even army posts. LOL
Let me put it another way. I was at Pope AFB in Fayetteville for four years before I went to Seymour. I never realized how nice Fayetteville was until I lived in Goldsboro.
I was actually stationed in Quantico my 3years previous to Goldsboro. The housing there is all new and ran by a private company: Welcome to Lyman Park
That said the old housing of a decade ago was beyond subpar. Quantico and every other base I've been to surpasses SJAFB, that includes Belvoir. I think what happened is that the USAF rested on their laurels of having superior quality of life, while the other services quietly passed them while trying to improve retention during the peak of OIF/OEF.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm so not looking forward to this move...
