Could somebody rate Mt. Airy on a scale from 1-10 on a Bedford Falls (It's a Wonderful Life) scale? I am moving from Chicago and looking for that kind of great small town community.

Any words?

Thanks

Mount Airy is nothing like Bedford Falls. If you want that kind of scenery you won't find it here in NC. I would suggest start looking around for "quaint little towns" on the internet and see what you come up with. Seriously.

Actually on 2nd thought, try looking for/at a place called Floyd, VA. I go there from time to time when I am in the area and they have bluegrass music all along the sidewalks on Friday nights in the summer where everyone can come out and play and join in with others playing. One great big jam session. They have a great health food store called "Harvest Moon" I believe. That would be close to what you are looking for or maybe just a bit smaller. Very unique. They have a website, search for Floyd, VA

If you do a search on this forum, you'll find several Mt. Airy (Mount Airy, in some threads) posts. You can get a lot of detail from them. What the town pretty much amounts to from a transplant POV, is an area near the mountains that is cheaper than the western side of the state. Many retirees who can't afford the blown-out-proportion prices there look to Mt. Airy. The town rolls out the charm a few times each year during the festivals; mostly to celebrate the Mayberry heritage; there is a theater that touts music events; otherwise it slumps back into its sleepy, nice-but-not-exciting, inexpensive lifestyle.
