Just two weeks after announcing a new global operations center in Charlotte, PayPal has nixed those plans, citing North Carolina's contentious House Bill 2 as the reason.
The California-based tech firm's expansion in Charlotte's University City area was expected to generate 400 new jobs for the region. It was announced March 18 during a Charlotte Chamber event attended by Gov. Pat McCrory, Mayor Jennifer Roberts and other state economic leaders.

This hate law is starting to cost NC. This one will cost millions and 400 jobs + it is a huge shield for other companies to make the same decision. Someone had to be first, thank you PayPal.
The "gubnor" said there wouldn't be any economic impact.
Was he expecting a rush of companies clamoring to create "family values" jobs? I mean, all is not lost... right? Maybe we can become THE STATE for the business of religion? We can open Christian bookstores, Christian restaurants, Christian THEME PARKS!! Maybe we should do more PR with Muslim communities and tempt them to relocate to our state... a state where religion is more highly valued than economic sustainability! Now that we've paved the way for religion-based community regulations we ought to capitalize on our "brand"! I have a new slogan... North Carolina: Free to be Sharia!
Maybe we can open a new plant that makes those communion wafers? Or communion grape juice? We could get into the Bible-printing business... Cmon folks, let's be creative! Religion is big (non-profit) business!
IDK, maybe PayPal should continue with the plan, build a new building with awesome bathrooms for everyone, win a prize for honoring diversity, and move a bunch of liberals to NC so they can buy some Liberal politicians and force the Moral Majority out of this state!
Google Ventures has stated that they will not back any companies in NC until the law is repealed. Not a good sign for biotech start ups. I suspect other VC firms will do the same.
But seriously doesn't charlotte get some blame for,uh, provoking the bull here?
They did tell them they were going to do this and they passed that ordinance......
Ummm, the national brouhaha came about by overruling Charlotte. The action by the state is just drawing more attention and support for their cause. If they had just ignored it on the state level no one outside of Charlotte would have ever known anything about it. The activists couldn't have asked for any better response, to promote their cause, than the one the state gave them.
