UNCSA doesn't have any character. As another poster said, its because of Old Salem, Salem Academy/College, parts of downtown, and the closer-in neighborhoods like West End, Buena Vista, etc.
Asheville, Wilmington, Durham, Winston-Salem would be the top four in my book.
Agreed. Those are the four cities that came to my mind as well. There are probably some smaller ones that would fit as well but I am less familiar with those.
Although Charlotte does better in that regard than many know or give it credit for, pound for pound, a couple of other cities in the state do a better job.
Plenty of "character"? Really? In what way? I think Charlotte is great...love Uptown, light rail, museums, sports, etc., but none of that screams "character" to me, especially in light of the way the OP asked.
