LLC Questions for NC Business Owners

I am considering starting a business and going in the direction of LLC.
This will most likely be a service industry business, and at some point later down the road sell goods as well.

My questions, for now, are the following:
1. Once the business obtains its IRS EIN number, is it necessary to obtain a state of NC EIN number as well?

2. I know the laws have changed here in NC regarding sales taxes for service industry jobs.
In my research, I find conflicting answers as to what the tax % is exactly.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to the most accurate information regarding this with links or other information?

Thank you.

1. Yes. From the NC Dept. of Revenue website:

"What information do I need to submit my application?
Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), and North Carolina Secretary of State Number (SOS), if applicable.
Your business name, address, phone number.
Partner or Responsible Person, if applicable (name, title, SSN, address).
Details about your business (begin date, type of business, etc.).
See the Business Registration Checklist for detailed information."

More here: Online Business Registration

2. Services subject to sales tax: http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/imp...ch1changes.pdf

For more details, I'd contact the NC Dept. of Revenue, or a local small business assistance center near you. Most community colleges have one. Google "small business assistance" and your county and you'll find one.

... or other information?
Liability insurance (and actual competence) matter far more than the corporate structure.
In fact, you may not really gain much by going any deeper into it all than a simple DBA.

More specific answers require more specific information...
and THAT should only be with a good attorney and CPA

A good starting point is either:

The Small Business Center Network, located at each community college, is what BC1960 is referring to.

The Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) has locations throughout NC on many of the state university campuses.

IMO, you don't need to pay for the services of an attorney or CPA until you have a better idea of what you want to do and how you plan to do it... e.g. a business plan. One of the above small business advisory services can help for free.
