Yeahhh idk about likely. The N&O site sold for the most money in Raleighs history and the previous buyers were already going to request a zoning for 40 floors before their deal fell through. No word yet on what the new developers have planned but they have stated they would like to get under way soon. We'll probably see a rendering by february. Very possible we're going to either be looking at a new tallest or multiple tower project, or both.
But yeah i guess there will just be a lot of variables as to how project 561 actually works out. PNC tower also has built in parking as well. And though its spire is a good size. Carroll would have to be making up for a lot more with his crown.
Carroll may decide to go with taller office and hotel floors to achieve the height. The 16th floor of the Renaissance Plaza tower in downtown Greensboro falls at the same level of the 14th floor in Center Pointe which was an office building so he may not have to have a spire thats 10 stories tall. So yes there are a number of variables. Carroll said he would make an announcement about whats going on that deck in January or February so we will find out once and for all what his plans are.

Im looking forward to it. Whatever it turns out to be it will be the biggest project Greensboro has seen in a long time.
PNC isnt all office, it has residential and also has a crown of about 8 to 9 stories and is a 538 foot tall building. An additional story or two added to a crown wont make much of a difference so it will look fine. In fact Project 561 should look very similar to the plate size of the PNC tower.
Are you messing with me? Of course PNC is residential & Office.
This is what 561 was supposed to look like according to that massing comparing the tallest in each city.
If it is mixed use, it won’t look like that. Because residential floor plates are smaller than office. It’ll probably look more like PNC if it is mixed use.
FAA has given RDU the nod to expand the airport. Once completed it will have the longest runway in North Carolina, a newly integrated car rental hub, redesigned central parking, 23 new terminals, and added routes to China in time for all the heavy Chinese investment NC is getting. At the cost of just over 2 billion dollars.

Yes you are probably right and thats a good thing because I really would not want to see a tall four sided box. I have a feeling architecturally what ever is being planned above the deck, 561 or not will be interesting. Downtown Greensboro really needs some striking contemporary highrises. What ever is built it will probably become the Triad's signature tower and there are more towers to come. Not to come down on Winston-Salem, but Greensboro is North Carolina's third largest city and it should have the third best skyline in the state. Greensboro comes close to that with the additional new towers and hopefully the unannounced towers I'm hearing about.

Actually, the article says that the new runway will "help" attract new long distance flights, including "perhaps" flights to China. Far from a sure thing.

Flights to Asia from Raleigh aren’t going to happen. Period.
Seoul & Tokyo are more likely than China though.
Even Philadelphia doesn’t have a flight to Asia.
PHL has a metro population of 6 million+, a large international hub for American with a couple dozen flights to Europe. AA has a JV with JAL which pretty much means, AA and JAL (Japan Airlines are considered a single airline over the Pacific. It’s not just partner airlines) essentially has a hub in both Tokyo & Philadelphia yet still no flights between the 2.
Raleigh most likely has less than 10 passengers per day on any given route to Asia. Good luck filling up nearly 300 seats with 6 or so passengers between the two cities
