I've been away from the South and NC for a long time. I recall NC being a huge place for manufacturing furniture (Thomasville, etc.). Are there still places to go for high quality furniture here? If so, where? I'm looking for high quality, more traditional-style furniture (Ethan Allen, Thomasville, Pennsylvania House). Finally, if there are such places to shop, is it really worth the drive? Thanks for any information you can provide!

I second Furnitureland South. It has a huge selection at good prices. Note that samples are on the floor but most furniture will have to be ordered and the wait time will likely be long. It took us about a year to receive the furniture we bought.

If at all adventuresome stop by the convention center in Hickory after the designer show has ended. Many furniture companies leave sample furniture out back rather than spend the dollars to ship it back. Dumpster diving at it's finest!

While waiting until after the show is definitely the cheapest way to get some furniture, if you have your heart set on a piece, go back the last day and bargain a bit with the representative. It is true many manufacturers don't want to handle and ship that furniture back to their warehouse, and will heavily discount the piece to move it at the end of the show. How much they discount it depends on how good a buyer you are in letting them know you are willing to walk away from the deal.

Thank you for these suggestions. I got on a few of the links, and it is completely overwhelming. However Hickory Furniture Mart had what I was looking for. I'm not sure if what I see is able to be customized, but it might be worth a trip up there. I really appreciate it.
